My New Favorite Nut Milk

Like a lot of bloggers, I can truly say that blogging has changed me, and for the better. It’s opened up my eyes to thinks I never knew existed. Who had ever heard of almond milk before blogs?

Almond

That one still baffles me.

Anyway, now I can say I’ve had them all. So Delicious coconut milk, pure coconut milk, Almond Breeze, Tempt hemp milk—you name it and I’ve probably drank it. The one thing that I had never tried was making my own. It seemed natural enough that after finishing off my last carton of almond milk I should save money and use some of the nuts I already had. But which to choose…

Hulled Hemp Seed

And that’s when I remembered Gena’s post on homemade hemp milk. In terms of nut milk, she made this one seem like an almond breeze to make. No straining, no soaking—just blending.

Hemp Milk

  • 1/3-1/2 cup hemp seeds
  • 1 cups filtered water
  • 1-2 tbsp agave nectar(omitted)
  • 1 tsp vanilla

Add all the ingredients to a high-powered blender or Vitamix. Blend all the ingredients for 30 seconds or until the seeds have became emulsified with the water making a “milk”. Pour the milk into a separate container and keep in a refrigerator for up to one week.

Look how frothy it is! This milk came out perfectly thick. There is a few chunks from the seeds left in it, but those mostly sink to the bottom and you can weed out. Besides, hemp seeds are so small they’re hardly a bother. I made such a small batch because all I use non-dairy milk for is a splash in breakfast bowls, but you could easily double or triple the recipe like Gena.

Really, why I loved this was because of the ease. It took 5 minutes start to finish, and I didn’t have to go to the store. Yahoo! Since I don’t go through this all that often, it’s much easier to buy a big bag of hemp seeds and blend a bit every weekend rather than keeping milk that might go bad around.

What’s your favorite kind of milk(or “milk”)?

I did a post on hemp milk a few weeks ago. I LOVED it. Of course, it wasn’t homemade, but store bought. It’s expensive….yikes, but worth it I think. The texture definitely agreed with me and the health benefits are fabulous!

Ive seen this recipe on Gena’s site and then another friend/raw foodie Christine made it and she also said it was thick and frothy and great as a creamer for coffee, or could be :) That’s all I need to hear! But sadly still have not made it b/c I dunno, I just havent. ha! But like you, I don’t go thru that much nut milk. I just use water mostly. Because I dont want to crack open a huge container of nut milk to use 1/4 c type thing. So I just never open them but now I should just take a tiny amt of hemp seeds, add water, and blend. With agave of course, i wouldnt omit that :)

Oh, E, I’m so happy you liked! It is a total cinch, for sure, and so tasty. Also, higher in protein than most storebought almond milk.

Ooh, that looks good! Hemp seed is so nutritious. I’ll bet the vanilla cuts the oily smell. My favorite “milk” is So Delicious vanilla coconut milk beverage. Very creamy and tasty, too.

I have to say my favorite is still good ol cow’s milk! I grew up on nonfat, so I got used to the thickness of it (or lack thereof) and so I really don’t like how thick the faux milks are, but more importantly, i hate that they’re so often filled with sugar and other junk that I don’t want to be ingesting at all. At least cow’s milk is JUST MILK and not “milk” plus sugar and preservatives and all sorts of other stuff that I’ve seen on the labels of non-cow’s milk.

    Sara,

While I share your aversion to unnecessary sweetening, it’s worth saying that the best non-dairy milks are minimally sweetened or not sweetened at all (especially when homemade). If one makes them at home, it’s also easy to avoid preservatives and other “stuff.” And these milks also don’t have the lactose and casein that seem to affect so many consumers’ health and wellness in negative ways.

Agreed…I don’t know what kind of nut milks your looking at? Although there are a lot of Soy Milks I used to see that were crazy. But there’s lots of other types with just a few ingredients and/or unsweetened.

…With that said, i still drink Cow’s Milk too. But variety is good.

Wow, I had no idea it was so easy to make “milk.” My favorite is probably almond or hazelnut milk.
