Dessert… Hummus?!

August 23rd 014

The first time I heard the phrase “dessert hummus” I was confused. “Hummus? As in chickpeas with garlic and onion and tahini? For dessert?!” Really, hummus just refers to something with a chickpea puree base; the rest of the flavorings and seasonings are completely up to you. And while traditionally hummus is given a savory spin, dessert hummus is a great way to make a sweet, creamy dip that adds sophistication to sweets.

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Dessert Hummus

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups chickpeas
  • 1/4 cup natural peanut butter
  • 1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons maple syrup
  • 1/2 Tablespoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup chocolate chips

August 23rd 004

In a food processor, add the first 4 ingredients and process until the hummus is smooth and emulsified(the one thing no one wants for dessert is chunky chickpea pieces in their dessert hummus). Remove the blade and fold in the chocolate chips. Move into a deep serving bowl.

At first I wasn’t sure if the vanilla extract was necessary, but after trying it with and without I have to say that it is a must in this recipe; it transforms the puree from tasting like chickpeas and peanuts to something reminiscent of peanut butter cookie dough.

August 23rd 028

Serve with graham crackers, cinnamon pita chips, or snickerdoodle cookies.

What’s the last thing you’ve tried that surprised you with how good it is? Not 24 hours after I made this batch, this is what the situation was.

The end.

I’m not going to lie, when I made my dessert hummus I actually did prefer a few pieces of chickpeas in it. Is it weird that I’ve also tossed fresh cooked chickpeas (just cooked in water, no seasonings) on top of my fruit and yogurt bowls?

Anyways, pumpkin also makes an awesome addition to dessert hummus (or anything for that matter really).

Okay, I admit that I’m not sure how great this sounds. But I felt the same way about chocolate pudding made out of avocados and I ended up loving it.

I’ll give this a try because I think chickpeas are one of the most perfect foods in the world!

In fact, I don’t even think I need graham crackers for dipping! I’d eat it straight like cookie dough! 😉

Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip anything is always a winner! the base of the hummus is what so many recipes that use black bean brownies this and that or white bean cookies, etc. They start with beans of some sort and then add in a bunch of cocoa powder, sweetener, etc and bake. Now i still havent jumped on the baked bean desserts but maybe i should. Dessert hummus/nobake/raw is wayyyy more my speed. Great work!!

    :)

I love making this! I add Cocoa powder (or Amazing Grass Chocolate Superfoods), but the key is adding TAHINI! Milled flax gives it a great nutty taste/texture! Crumbled granola/cereal/cookies are the best in it! Try adding Quinoa, Tahini, honey etc, and making it into either a crust/or baking it into cookies! Frozen it tastes like cookie dough!
Also, blended/whipped with either cottage cheese/yogury/ricotta/marscapone,quark or bakers cheese makes it TO DIE FOR! A scoop of protein powder, and I’m in heaven! Microwaving it with the above and an egg makes it into a souffle/custard! I love chick peas!
