The Today Show Has My Heart

There are few things that I make it a point to do every day: blog, eat, brush my teeth, and watch segments of The Today Show.

My obsession with The Today Show started a little under a year ago. I began running on the treadmill at my school gym, and it was what everyone put on TV. “The news? Ugh. Who wants to watch that?” But as the days went on and the treadmill miles piled up, I realized The Today Show was so much more.

From Winter to Spring to Summer I’ve watched as they masterfully and humorously have covered Tiger Woods’ sorted affairs, the Winter Olympics, and the European volcano eruption to name a few. My favorite moments haven’t came from any segment in particular, but rather in those magical moments in between segments where Al, Meredith, Ann, and Matt play around. I mean, how can you not die laughing when Al Roker sings “So hot it’ll melt ya popsicle.”?

Throughout the 100′s(probably 1000′s) of segments I’ve seen, this is by far my favorite:

Just watch it and try not to die laughing.

It got me thinking; what are the things that I can do to make my life-long dream of being on The Today Show come true? Here’s a list I’ve come up with based on my predecessors:

  • Create an inspiring grass-roots movement like Operation Beautiful
  • Become a celebrity chef and host a cooking segment
  • Sleep with Tiger Woods
  • Hiccup for 2 weeks straight
  • Dial up Mel Gibson and see what he has to say
  • Turn 100 and get Willie to announce my birthday
  • Lie about sending a beloved family member floating away in a silver balloon(if I play my cards right, that could get me on The Today Show 3 times!)
  • Create a phone that doesn’t work and yell at all my customers for holding it wrong
  • Give the definitive answer to “Where In The World Is Matt Lauer” by holding up a sign at Rockefeller center with his home address
  • Bull Rush Al Roker screaming at the top of my lungs “THERE’S NOTHING HAPPENING IN MY NECK OF THE WOODS”

It’s good to know I have options.

Of course, I could go the other route and plan on being a Today Show host.

They let a weatherman do it, and I’m pretty sure you can get that degree online these days. They brought Meredith in after hosting Who Wants To Be A Millionare; next week Pat Sajak should hop on the Good Morning America team. And Matt Lauer was a college dropout until 1997. There’s room for a Classicist/blogger to join the team.

What would your dream job be? If any of my readers happy to be 2nd cousins of the executive producer of The Today show or something crazy like that, help a brother out! And in all seriousness, congrats Caitlin!

haa haa… this WHOLE post is so awesome in so many ways. I love your list, however ridiculous some of those are (I was really getting tired of hearing days of Mel Gibson belligerence).

    :)

for I too am a Today Show watcher – I turn it on and watch / listen each morning as I eat breakfast / prepare for my day…

and I’ll be watching Caitlin August 5th – WOO! :)

Oh man, I LOVE the Today Show! One of my shining achievements was standing out there in the freezing cold so I could be on tv one morning!

    Haha…too funny! :D

I think my dream job would involve being a dietitian for the Red Sox. Or maybe dreaming up creative concoctions for hiking meals and working for Backpacker Magazine. I think I need to make a list of things to make these work, much like your list. ;)

Thanks for such a brilliant post. It made my day. :D

I’ll keep looking for that Smucker’s birthday boy. Easily my favorite part of the show.

Lol! I love your list of options! Sleep with Tiger Woods? Why not? Haha. My dream job would be to open a bakery of some sort. In all probability, it will never happen.

Oh wow, this whole post cracked me up! I love watching the Today Show too. I used to always want to be a cartoonist for Disney, but in reality, I’m not sure how fun it would really be – probably very meticulous and time-consuming. Now I think my dream job is teaching fitness classes at some swanky resort.

    Ha! Great post :)

My dream job is to host The Today Show too. THe year I graduated college my friends and I went to watch the Today Show being filmed and stood in the back with signs that said ‘We just graduated from FSU. NBC Please give us a job”

    Good times :)
